Project Overview

Sufra is a contemporary Middle Eastern restaurant designed to celebrate the region's rich culture through architecture, interiors and hospitality. The design draws inspiration from traditional gathering places, where food, family and conversation take centre stage, while introducing a refined contemporary aesthetic suited to modern Australian dining.

Designed by ALAï Architecture + Interiors, the project transforms a simple commercial tenancy into an immersive hospitality destination that balances warmth, elegance and functionality. Earthy materials, handcrafted textures, soft lighting and lush planting create an atmosphere that feels welcoming throughout the day and intimate by evening.

Every design decision was guided by ALAï's philosophy of form. function. feeling, creating a venue that is memorable not only for its cuisine, but for the experience of the space itself.

Project Description

Inspired by the Arabic word "Sufra", meaning 'the table where family and friends gather to share a meal', the design centres around connection, hospitality and community.

The architecture embraces soft organic forms through a series of sweeping arches, textured plaster finishes and carefully framed dining spaces that encourage both intimacy and openness. A neutral palette of warm stone, natural timber and earthy fabrics provides a timeless backdrop, while woven lighting, handcrafted details and abundant greenery introduce texture and depth throughout the venue.

The restaurant has been carefully zoned to offer a variety of dining experiences. Comfortable banquette seating accommodates larger family gatherings, while smaller tables create intimate settings for couples and casual dining. A dedicated lounge area provides a relaxed environment for coffee, desserts and evening conversation, extending the experience beyond the meal itself.

At the heart of the venue, the café counter showcases warm timber joinery, natural stone surfaces and minimalist detailing, allowing the food and hospitality to remain the focus. The outdoor terrace extends the dining experience into the landscape, with striped market umbrellas, landscaped planters and ambient lighting creating a vibrant streetscape that invites guests from morning through late evening.

Throughout the project, every material and detail has been selected to evoke authenticity while maintaining durability for a busy hospitality environment.

Design Philosophy

The design of Sufra demonstrates that exceptional hospitality begins long before the food reaches the table.

Rather than relying on ornamentation, the space achieves its character through proportion, natural materials and atmosphere. Soft curves replace sharp edges, layered lighting creates intimacy, and carefully selected textures invite guests to slow down and enjoy the experience.

The result is a restaurant that feels timeless, welcoming and authentic—a destination where architecture enhances hospitality and every visit encourages people to gather, connect and return.

At ALAï, we believe great hospitality design creates lasting memories. Sufra is an expression of that belief, combining thoughtful planning with enduring materials and a human-centred approach to create a venue that is both commercially successful and emotionally engaging.
